Misleading claims: Unfortunately, many filter makers use phrases like “independently tested to ANSI/NSF standards” to imply that they’re certified. But if clogging is an issue or a concern with your water filtering, those minor shortcomings pale in comparison. A few design and filtration-speed quibbles, which are outlined in the main discussion below, reflect why it’s not our top pick or runner-up. The fact that LifeStraw makes these test results public and has years of experience in supplying filtration for disaster relief, developing-world water-quality initiatives, and outdoors enthusiasts, means we trust its claims. The LifeStraw also has four ANSI/NSF certifications (for chlorine, taste and odor, lead, and mercury), and it’s been independently tested by certified labs against dozens of other ANSI/NSF standards. For anyone who has experienced clogging with another water filter-including our recommended Purs and Britas-or who is looking for a solution to known rusty or otherwise sediment-rich tap water, it’s our clear pick. We ran 2.5 gallons of heavily rust-contaminated water through the LifeStraw Home Dispenser, and although it slowed slightly, it never stopped filtering. ![]()

They wrote: “It was just like this, not blinking lights, no nothing, just floating in the sky for about four minutes and then it went up until it was completely gone.”Īrslan stayed to appreciate the curious shape swirling in the skies were too dark to see it. ![]() ![]() ![]() After a long day of travelling, foraging and eating, a gorilla will skillfully create its nest from branches and leaves. Working in a mixer fitted with the paddle attachment or in a bowl with a hand mixer, beat the butter and both sugars together on medium speed for about 3 minutes, or until smooth.Whisk together the flour, baking powder and salt and keep at hand.I hope those of you who haven’t already made the tart, will - it’s really one of my all-time favorite recipes - and that those of you who’ve already made it, will find these tweaks helpful the next time you decide to whisk up this treat. And, while you shouldn’t add the butter to the cream while it’s still very hot (if you do, then the butter will melt, as it does in a lemon curd, and you won’t get the great texture that sets this cream apart), you don’t really need to measure the cream’s temperature before you butterize it - if you leave the cream in the blender for 8 to 10 minutes, it will be just the right temperature for blending in the butter.įinally, I made this tart on Sunday as part of my workshop at Pastry Scoop’s Spring Conference at The French Culinary Institute, and, because it was at hand, I used lime juice in place of the lemon juice and it worked perfectly. Of course, if you’re going to supercharge the power under the bowl, you’ve got to be vigilant - you can’t take your eyes off the cream energetic - you can’t stop whisking, even for a few seconds and nimble - as soon as the cream shows the slightest signs of thickening, measure the temperature and make sure to remove the bowl from the heat immediately the instant you hit 180 degrees F.Ī couple of other re-thinks: If your lemon zest was very finely grated (I use a Microplane grater/zester), then you don’t need to strain the cream - just quickly scrape the hot cream from the bowl into the blender. With so much heat under the bowl, the cream came up to 180 degrees F in under 10 minutes (in fact, the first time I did it, it took 4 minutes and 39 seconds the second time, it took almost 7 minutes - different bowl, different pot, different stove). ![]() I then put the bowl (a metal bowl) with all the ingredients over the steaming soup pot (making sure that the bottom of the bowl wasn’t touching the boiling water) and whisked like mad. So here’s what I did over the weekend - I got bold! To make my double boiler, I used a soup pot and I filled it about 2/3 full of water, which I brought to a boil. ![]() ![]() To finish the cream, you pour it into a blender and cool it slightly before you whir in room-temperature butter - but that’s not the problemmatic part. The bowl is put over a saucepan with a few inches of boiling water and you whisk, whisk, whisk until the mixture thickens enough for the whisk to leave tracks, then you keep whisking until the cream measures 180 degrees F on a candy or instant-read thermometer. To recap, the recipe calls for the sugar, lemon zest, lemon juice and eggs to be mixed together in a bowl. Well, I made the recipe over the weekend and I’ve got a new thought on how to speed up the process and still get the thick, smooth, almost velvety cream that makes this tart so remarkable. ![]() ![]() But since the Dachshunds love to dig, it can be argued that they belong in the terrier group- it all depends on which way you look at it. Since the Dachshunds were originally bred to trail and hunt animals, they probably descended from scent hounds, such as Bloodhounds, Pointers and Basset Hounds. Similarly, the breed was then bred and selected for other traits that would make it more appealing in its new role, such as playfulness, affection, and friendliness rather than a prey drive- which, truthfully, did survive in the breed to this day in some form (it’s mostly the garden beds that bear the brunt of it).ĭachshunds may share the behavior and appearance of a terrier, but in actuality, the breed belongs to the hound group of dogs. Not unlike most small dogs in that period, Dachshunds were beloved lap dogs of ladies and nobles, and started enjoying all of the perks that came with their new status. It is then when the dogs were bred to be smaller in size- the Dachshunds became about 10 pounds lighter in this transition. ![]() While originally developed to be used for hunting, in the 1800s, Dachshunds moved from hunters to cherished and pampered pets. ![]() Interestingly, the smooth-haired type of Dachshund is believed to be the oldest of the tree, with the wiry and long-haired variants being developed later in the breed’s history. The smaller Dachshunds were used to hunt hare and rabbits, while the larger ones caught smaller animals like otters and foxes. As well, its large and paddle-shaped paws made digging efficient and its loose skin ensured it wouldn’t tear as the dog tunneled into tight burrows. Its short legs let it burrow deep into the badgers’ dens and its long, sturdy tail gave the hunters a “handle” they could pull to retrieve the burrowing dog out from the den. The Dachshund was engineered for this hunting activity and it is directly reflected through its unique body shape. Books from that era describe certain dogs named “Dachs Kriecher” (meaning “badger crawler”) or “ Dachs Krieger” (“badger warrior”), and it is largely believed that this is when the Dachshund breed was actually developed as such- the previous mentions were more general and referred to all types of dogs fulfilling the role of badger hunting rather than a specific breed.īred to track and hunt badgers, this breed was developed with the specific sport in mind. Some sources place the origin of the breed as far as the 15th century, but a more likelier number is late 17th to early 18th century, when first concrete mentions of a dachshund-like breed can be found. The Dachshund can trace its origins hundreds of years ago to Germany. You may know it as the “Weiner Dog,” but its actual breed name is Dachshund. If you’re looking for a happy addition to your family, you can’t go wrong with a Dachshund – it always has a friendly look on its face. ![]() Another distinguishing characteristic is its long ears that are soft to the touch.
